Although some people seem to think that rugs over the top of carpets is some sort of deadly sin, there are no hard and fast rules to say you can’t have one. Even our top home designers in Los Angeles believe that this can look great, if it is done correctly. Maybe, in the ideal world, you wouldn’t need to cover a carpet up with a rug – particularly an area rug. But we know that life is far from ideal and particularly, if you are in a rental property, you may be stuck with whatever carpet your landlord has chosen for you. Or maybe your carpet simply has some signs of wear, which you need to cover up. Either way, there are some very good reasons to consider laying a rug over the top of your carpet. And what sort of rug should you be looking at? Well, the main issue is what your carpet looks like. Maybe you are hoping to completely obliterate all traces of your carpet, or in other cases, may be trying to make it work in tandem with your existing carpet...
In either case (but especially the latter) it is paramount that your carpet works well with your newly chosen rug. So, this means making sure it matches with both the color and the texture of it. Matching doesn’t have to mean blending in undetectably from the carpet that is already down there. Far from it, but it needs to gel with it. This would mean trying to get elements of the carpet – and where possible, the rest of the room, to co-ordinate. If your carpet is patterned, then it might be best to go for a plain rug, and vice versa. Similarly, a carpet with a short pile may be juxtaposed better with a thick, fluffy rug than woven rug. The same applies to color, of course it is up to you, if you want a very colorful room or a completely neutral one, but in general, we would advise mixing it up between your carpeting and your rug.
