Matching doesn’t have to mean blending in undetectably from the carpet that is already down there. Far from it, but it needs to gel with it. This would mean trying to get elements of the carpet – and where possible, the rest of the room, to co-ordinate. If your carpet is patterned, then it might be best to go for a plain rug, and vice versa. Similarly, a carpet with a short pile may be juxtaposed better with a thick, fluffy rug than woven rug. The same applies to color, of course it is up to you, if you want a very colorful room or a completely neutral one, but in general, we would advise mixing it up between your carpeting and your rug. Generally, the advice would be to use the smaller rugs sparingly and ensure that they co-ordinate well with not only your area rug, but the surrounding furniture.
